John: Had no idea his frequent credit card use would leave him in financial dire straights.

“To this day I can’t quite believe how much debt I got myself into. Suddenly I had 15 credit cards not just 1 or 2 and had over £100,000 worth of debt on them. My creditors began calling me day and night, it was one of the worst periods of my life and I never want to go back there again.”

John accrued his debts in the most simple and easy to fall in to way; credit cards. From buying little things like milk to lavish holidays, you name it he bought it.

“I was just manically shopping, I didn’t realise what I was doing, it just kind of happened. I love having new things and didn’t like waiting till pay day to get them. Back then I had no idea why I was doing it other than greed, but now I realise that I had been unhappy at work and at home for years and was pushing all my anxieties on to aestheticism”

John’s financial situation came to ahead when he experienced humiliation as his family found the extent of his debts. It was in fact, his mother who encouraged him to ring Melanie Giles and at least discuss his problems.

“I had a steady job so I just needed a good debt management plan that would look after me. The thing that I wasn’t good at was being responsible for my own finances so it really helped that an IVA sorted out a standing order for me.
