Alison: A messy divorced caused huge financial stress as well as emotional.

Alison had been married for 15 years with 6 children when she discovered that her husband had been having an affair. She was made even more incredulous when her husband informed her that he intended to fight for full custody of the children as he wanted to start family life with his new love.

“I couldn’t believe it was true, all those years washed away like that. But I realised that I couldn’t let him win, couldn’t be beaten by his betrayal or let him keep my kids. This made me strong, but the loans I had to take out to pay my lawyer fees, though worth it, were financially crippling”

Alison hired the best attorney in her area to help fight for her children and, as she saw it, her life. All the while, debts were growing and growing as any parent would know, it’s not cheap to feed and school 6 children.

The legal details took a long time and much money to sort out, but finally Alison did win custody of her children but it came at a price; she owed her creditors an approximate sum of £43,000 of debt.

“At first I tried to create my own debt management plan, but because I wasn’t working regularly and trying to raise my children, I struggled to pay off any of my debts. So I started looking into alternatives. An IVA looked so much better than bankruptcy because it wouldn’t affect my children so much, we wouldn’t lose our home and wouldn’t have to sell our belongings”

Alison has been debt free for 3 years now and hasn’t looked back. She admitted that she found the IVA process very hard as her income was irregular but because of the support and flexibility of Melanie Giles she was able to have a break in her payments when things got really tough.

These stories reflect the nature of Melanie Giles’ service: committed, personal help towards your debt free future.
